Runway's Backyard Block Party brings live music, food, cold drinks, lawn games, and a full summer evening on the turf with the Playa Vista community, positioned as an excuse to stay out later and mark the start of summer. When it lands, the food operators around the lawn tilt into party mode: the PV House Beer Garden pours through the evening, Joliet Bar's patio pizza kitchen runs fresh pies, Hopdoddy runs sliders, LOQUI serves a margarita and carne asada taco special, and SOL Cocina puts out a Taco and Margarita Party Pack for groups.
The practical read for a resident: if you have out-of-town family arriving on a Block Party Friday, you do not need to book a restaurant. The lawn becomes the restaurant. If you would rather host a proper table, the same Friday is the wrong Friday, because parking pressure spikes and the patios fill by 6:30. Track which Fridays are jazz-only and which are block parties, and the calendar tells you which mode of evening is available.
The community rituals worth putting on a calendar
Two dates in July are worth pinning specifically.
The first is the Wednesday-through-summer cadence of Playa Vista Nights, which is easy to treat as ambient but rewards showing up early. Vendors sell through, and the same makers do not always come back the following week.
The second is a slower morning event. The third community Bagels and Brew in Playa Vista is set for July 17, 2026 at 9:00 AM at The Resort, 12852 Runway Road, positioned as a chance for neighbors to connect over bagels and coffee. That is a resident-scale event, not a marketing event. If you have been in the neighborhood a year and still recognize almost no one, this is the low-effort entry point.
For families, the summer programming extends past The Turf. SFK Academy of Dance is running an eight-week summer session from July 5 through August 29, 2026 with ballet, hip-hop, musical theatre, tumbling, piano, and parent-and-me classes, welcoming children from 16 months through teen ages. SoFly Kids Summer Camp runs June 15 through August 7, 2026, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, with art, science, sports, cooking, swimming, carnival games, and field trips. Both keep kids inside the neighborhood on weekday afternoons, which is part of what makes the Wednesday market feel less like an errand and more like a school-year handoff.
What is actually new on the food side
The tenant lineup at Runway is not static this summer. Runway has announced that SEABUTTER is arriving as its newest eatery in the coming weeks. That is a name worth noting now, because the pattern with Runway openings has been that the patios fill fastest in the first month, before the schedule normalizes.
The existing lineup is the one to know cold if you are the person in your group who picks. The current Playa Vista roster includes SOL Mexican Cocina, dan modern chinese, P.V. House, LOQUI, Urban Plates, HomeState, Bacari PDR, Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Super Dumpling, and Joliet Restaurant and Bar. Joliet reads to regulars as the quieter option. Joliet Cafe and Bar is styled as a speakeasy in Playa Vista, with the drinks, food, and service repeatedly called thoughtful and high quality by return diners. On a Block Party night, its patio pizza kitchen is doing double duty on the lawn while the interior stays a calmer bookend for a longer dinner.
One practical note that matters if you are new to the property. Runway's garage is entered from Jefferson Boulevard or off Village Drive, with complimentary parking available through validation from participating restaurants and shops. On concert Fridays, the Jefferson entrance queues earlier than Village Drive.
A resident's Friday, roughly
Picture the second Friday in July. Walk out at 5:45. Pick up a slice from Joliet's patio pizza window on the way to The Turf. Land on the lawn by 6:05 for the first jazz set. Around seven, the Summer Concert Series set takes over and the crowd doubles. If you have children with you, you drift toward the concert-adjacent food operators. If you do not, you keep the blanket and let the second set play out. By 8:15, the lawn is thinning, the Wednesday-market vendors are long gone, and P.V. House and Bacari PDR are the two remaining rooms with real energy.
That sequence did not exist as a repeatable weekly script three summers ago. It exists now because the programming has settled into a rhythm the neighborhood can plan around. The reason to know it is not to attend everything. It is to know which Friday is which, so that the one weekend you do want a quiet dinner on the block, you pick the right one.

The larger point about Playa Vista in July 2026 is that the neighborhood has stopped asking residents to hunt for a plan. The Turf is the plan. Wednesday is the market. Friday is the music.
